Why virtual mobile operators do not finish convincing the Mexican market? Why virtual mobile operators do not finish convincing the Mexican market?
In the last months we have followed up on all the adjustments that originated since the Telecommunications Reform in Mexico was announced. This change in legislation has brought interesting adjustments in the radio, television, fixed telephony and mobile telephony markets, the latter being one that has presented the most changes.
With an estimated 102.2 million telephone lines in the country, of which 87% still have prepaid service, we have decided to try to find out why Mexicans prefer this service over rental plans. .
Why is the prepaid service in Mexico still in effect?
One fifth of Mexicans have no opinion regarding the new Telecommunications Reforms. These are irrelevant to the consumer as long as they do not affect their economy
To begin with, we could focus on a study that the firm Millward Brown made and presented last October where it was said that telecommunications services were not of interest to us. The reason? We are not interested in knowing about our contracts or the charges they make, so we always look for the best, easiest way to keep our expenses under control.
This is how we began to understand how the prepayment service throughout the country continues to dominate over the benefits that a monthly rental plan could offer us. All this while the consumer is not interested in getting involved in major problems with their supplier they should find a way to keep an attractive commercial offer for each of their customers.
But if we add to this formula that the Telecommunications Reform has eliminated long distance charges, preferential charges for being from one or another company and the arrival of other operators called Virtuals, we discovered that the Prepaid market instead of disappearing has strengthened
How much does the average user spend?
The average cost of a prepaid user is 127 pesos per month. Eight out of 10 users recharge 100 pesos or less
The IFT has already said that telephony services have shown a reduction in their prices and although the change is not so noticeable with the arrival of Virtual Mobile Operators, little by little we see how the benefits we obtain from a minimum recharge begin to exceed what we would get for hiring a postpaid service.
What are the advantages of Prepaid?
Call mobile
As I was saying, today to say that we hire prepaid mobile phone service does not mean that we are limited in service, if not quite the opposite, it can be synonymous with keeping track of our finances. There is a trend that indicates that as the age of the population increases, it is more likely that you will acquire an income plan.
With the increase of WiFi connections in the home, office and free access people begin to acquire a smartphone without the need to be "tied" to a rental plan. And if we add to these changes that companies such as Virgin Mobile Mexico and Tuenti have arrived in Mexico, the established operators also had to adjust to offer a wide variety of benefits to their users.
For a minimum recharge we are given minutes of telephony, text messages, data service and a series of services that support us to stay connected without the need to have a balance
So regardless of whether we recharge our line to the minimum that allows the operator, we can maintain communication with our family and friends through social networks, WhatsApp or Internet calls that offer services such as Skype, Vine, BlackBerry Messenger, etc.
Furthermore, if we consider that at present, as rental plans can not be offered in forced installments, equipment prices are similar to whether we buy them independently, of course, when using them in prepayment we have the advantage that they will be released for use with Any company.
What are the disadvantages of prepayment?
Prepaid
I personally think that the prepaid service has evolved in such a way that postpaid has been relegated to the background (despite the fact that in other countries it has been different), so among the few differences that prepayment has are the following:
According to some studies it is known that young people are the ones who opt for prepayment due to their economic dependence, but keeping the prepayment (even if it sounds strange) can close us doors, one of them is the credit history. Since I have had to see cases where some companies to process some line of credit for young people request information from their mobile phone rental plan.
In the second point it is found that keeping prepaid and with minimum recharges can be dangerous in case of an emergency, since in those occasions we may need to make calls with a periodicity higher than the one we have contracted and if we do not find where to recharge, the problems begin.
In conclusion
The prepayment has evolved in a very interesting way in Mexico and it is a very viable option if you think about keeping a monthly control of your expenses, since most of the companies in the country for a recharge of 150 or 200 pesos offer you during a whole mes social networks, whatsapp, browsing the Internet, minutes of calls to the whole country (some even international) and text messages.
And with an average cost of 1 peso per MB, SMS or minute in the end we end up getting a wider amount of benefits by paying less.
