Start using fingerprint
About fingerprint security
We recommend that you lock the screen to help protect your device. The fingerprint sensor gives you easy screen lock options.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Fingerprints may be less secure than PINs, patterns, or passwords.
A copy of the fingerprint can be used to unlock the phone. You leave your fingerprints on many of the things you touch, including the phone.
You will be asked to add a PIN, pattern, or backup password. Remember these backup PINs, patterns, and passwords because sometimes you will need them, such as after restarting the device or if the fingerprint is not recognized.
Fingerprint data storage
Your fingerprint data is stored securely and is only on the device. Data will not be shared to Google or apps on the device. Learn more about securing fingerprint data.

Setting up the first fingerprint
On your device, open the Settings Settings App.
Tap Security & Location.
Tap Pixel Imprint or Nexus Imprint.
Follow the steps on the screen. If you do not already have a screen lock, you'll be prompted to add a PIN, pattern, or backup password to unlock your device.
Scan the first fingerprint. Tips:
Place your finger over the device sensor (not on the screen).
Hold the phone as usual when unlocking. For example, hold the phone with the screen position facing you.
Added more fingerprints
You can add a maximum of 5 fingerprints. You can add another finger that can be used to unlock the device.Keep in mind that anyone whose fingerprint you add can unlock your device, and authorize purchases with your account.

On your device, open the Settings Settings App.
Tap Security & Location.
Tap Pixel Imprint or Nexus Imprint.
Scan the fingerprint you've added or use the backup screen lock method.
Tap Add fingerprint.
Scan for more fingerprints.
You can rename each fingerprint so you can tell it apart. Tap the current name, type a new name, and tap OK.
Note: If someone else shares your device, they must add a fingerprint from within their profile. Learn about user and guest profiles.
