One of the biggest obstacles that has not allowed virtual reality to become a mass phenomenon, is the fact that dedicated hardware is needed, which is usually quite expensive.

For this reason, devices such as Daydream and Gear VR, in which the main device is the cell phone, allow the technology to be more accessible and accessible to all.

And we have good news: Google decided to further expand the Daydream platform outside the Pixel, its flagship phone.

The CEO of Google, Sundhar Pichai, revealed today during a financial meeting his plans to make Daydream a platform that can be accessed from more devices. According to The Verge, a total of 11 Android phones will be able to use Daydream's technology.

Currently, the Google Pixel, the Motorola Z line, the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, the Mate 9 with Porsche design, the ZTE Axon 7 and the Asus Zenfone AR are compatible. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are currently being adapted.

The Daydream has been well received by critics since it was released late last year, for its ability to share high-quality content in virtual reality using cell phone hardware.

Of course it does not reach the levels of devices dedicated to it like the Oculus and the HTC Vive, but it is comfortable, immersive and easy to use.

To experience the content in virtual reality, users simply insert the cell phone into Daydream View, an accessory that costs only $ 80. The advantage that the Daydream View has over the Samsung VR is that it is compatible with more devices.

Clearly, Google has great ambitions for virtual reality and plans to expand the range of devices that support Daydream. However, it is not the only device that Google is betting on. During the Google I / O developer conference, the company announced that they are working on a device for virtual reality that does not use cell phones and that should not be connected to an external computer. It would be an independent virtual reality device.

Pichai did not reveal which models would be part of this expansion, but as the season for announcements of new cell phones approaches, it is only a matter of time to know which ones will be compatible with the Daydream.
